Cubic Yard Calculator
Cubic Yard Formula
Total Cubic Yards = (Area in Square Feet × Depth in Feet) ÷ 27
Or alternatively: (Area × Depth in Inches) ÷ 324

Cubic Yard Calculator FAQs
Why do I need to add extra when ordering materials?
Most projects require 10-15% extra material to account for:
- Compaction (especially for soils/gravel)
- Spillage during delivery/pouring
- Uneven subgrades
- Measurement inaccuracies
How do I calculate for multiple layers/depths?
Calculate each layer separately:
- Base layer (e.g., 6″ gravel): Area ÷ 54 = CY
- Top layer (e.g., 3″ mulch): Area ÷ 108 = CY
- Add both results for total material needed
What’s the difference between cubic yards and tons?
Cubic yards measure volume, tons measure weight. Conversion depends on material density:
- Crushed stone: 1 CY ≈ 1.4 tons
- Topsoil: 1 CY ≈ 1.1 tons
- Sand: 1 CY ≈ 1.3 tons
