Amps to Kilowatts Conversion Formulas

1. DC Current (Direct Current)

kW = (Amps × Volts)/1000

Example:

  • 10A at 12V → (10×12)/1000 = 0.12 kW

2. AC Single-Phase (Household Power)

kW = (Amps × Volts × PF)/1000

PF (Power Factor) = Typically 0.8–1 (1 for resistive loads like heaters, 0.8 for motors).
Example:

  • 15A at 120V, PF=0.9 → (15×120×0.9)/1000 = 1.62 kW

3. AC Three-Phase (Industrial Power)

kW = (Amps × Volts × PF × √3)/1000 (Line-to-Line)

kW = (Amps × Volts × PF × 3)/1000  (Line-to-Neutral)

Example:

  • 20A at 480V, PF=0.85 (Line-Line) → (20 × 480 × 0.85 × 1.732)/1000 ≈ 14.13 kW
